I view my students and mentees as unique human beings, with their own skills, talents, and experiences, their own goals, and their own learning styles. I combine this asset-based view with positive motivation and the ability to approach a topic a thousand different ways to support musicians in achieving their goals, and also have those achievements supported by developing critical thinking skills that are necessary for true understanding and continued growth.

Of course, it helps that I have 25 years’ experience coaching privately, in classes and ensembles, and groups of all sizes. It helps that I love teaching. It also helps that I have 25 years’ experience playing professionally, from solo gigs to orchestras, in just about every type of situation imaginable, as a leader and as a sideman, with musicians nobody knows and musicians everybody knows. It helps that I love playing. It helps that I’ve played a farmers market and been on the GRAMMY stage (I’ve been on two records that have won). It helps that I’ve got two degrees from renowned conservatories (a bachelor’s from Berklee and a master’s from Manhattan School of Music), and that I’ve done more auditions than I can count for a number of schools. All of this helps, and it only scratches the surface of what I bring to working together. That’s because when we work together, what I bring that matters the most is the ability to work with you to identify what you need to reach your goals, devise the strategy you need to get there, and help you assess and refine your goals along the way.
